COPCAR-a system for detecting heart problems before the patient himself

COPCAR is a revolutionary  system that can detect adverse cardiac conditions before the patient himself does. Your chances of surviving a heart attack depend directly on how long it takes to attend the problem, according to the Spanish Heart Foundation. This can sometimes be too much, among other things, by the time it takes to realize what’s happening to you. But a group of Spanish researchers has developed a system with which they intend to help in this problem.

This is COPCAR (Control of high-risk patients) consists of a textile garment full of sensors that will read your heart activity at all times. This data is sent to a mobile using an application that, as the creators assure, would be able to detect almost immediately your heart attack and warn you, and when it detects a problem sends them to a control center to start the pertinent warnings.

COPCAR has been developed by a group of researchers led by Tomás Vicente, head of the cardiology service at the Reina Sofía Hospital in Murcia, and the expert systems engineer in telemedicine Carlos Jiménez. While doing the research they took help from BQ, who has provided them with the mobile devices in which to carry out the tests and to develop the application.

How COPCAR Works

COPCAR focuses on people who have cardiovascular problems and want or need to keep a constant monitoring of their vital signs. To do this, this ECG monitoring system has a garment that you put on your chest, which has a small device attached called ‘minder’. It is responsible for recording and transmitting the signals to the smartphone via Bluetooth.

On the mobile you can read the signals by an app in which you will also be able to see your heart rate in real time and make a call to the emergency services. The application is responsible for performing a preliminary processing of your vital data and if it detects any problems it sends them to a data center that interprets cardiac activity.

With this mechanics in three steps and always according to its creators, COPCAR should be able to detect a wide range of heart disease. Such as, arrhythmia, angina pectoris or cardiac infarct. After detecting the problem the device sends an alert to a Signal collection center, where a medical team evaluates the information. Then they inform the user, his/her relatives and the emergency location services about the user status and the risk of the episode he’s suffering.

“A person usually takes about 45 minutes to determine if he or she is having a heart attack before calling 112,” says Tomás Vicente, one of the project’s leaders. “With COPCAR he does it in a minute because he doesn’t have to decide it based only on his feelings.”

Obviously, these are the forecasts of their creators, so until a large number of people starts testing it you will not be able to have a realistic notion of reaction times. They also have other challenges like the comfort of their bra-shaped garment and how the system reacts to situations such as the user having their mobile switched off or without coverage to send the information to the data center.

In any case, we are discussing an amazing device that aims to save lives by reducing the 139 minutes of media that usually takes a patient to receive medical care since suffering a cardiac episode which is only 17 minutes in urban areas and a bit more in remote ares.

The price, another factor to take into account

Yoy can purchase COPCAR  in the online shop of the project for a price of 990 euros. It includes two of the textile garments, two gels, a minder, the monitoring application and a mobile that do not specify a specific model, but given the association with BQ should belong to the Spanish brand.

In the pictures of the product it’s visible that the mobile that appears is a Aquaris x 5 Plus whose price is around 280 euros. That means the other 710 euros would belong to the rest of the system that comes included in the purchase.

Sony will re manufacture vinyl discs!!

Sony will re manufacture vinyl discs, after they have been abandoned for 28 years. During the explosion of retro products, Sony is the new example that shows us that this ‘ trend ‘ is growing significantly. Also, Sony is shaping up to maintain this rhythm and even to increase it, in the coming years.

Nintendo and it’s retro consoles and the increase in sales of cassettes are just a few examples that this retro fashion has resurrected. Instead, it can be termed as the ‘ fad ‘ and is rapidly transforming into a trend.

Already, this trend is generating millions of dollars of turnover each year. Sony has noticed this and have decided to reopen a factory to produce vinyl discs again.

vinyl discs

A fashion that is no longer fashionable

According to information obtained by Agence France-Presse, Sony is already preparing a new factory located in southwestern Tokyo. There they will start manufacturing vinyl records from March 2018, a business that was abandoned in 1989 after sales. They fell to the arrival of the CDs.

It is not yet confirmed which type of vinyl will be manufactured by Sony. But the information mention that it will be traditional Japanese music discs as well as some contemporary titles.

Vinyl Discs

According to some data, only in 2016 the sale of vinyls  reached a historical maximum for a total of 3.2 million of discs. It was a sales volume that was not generated and recorded since 1991. This statistics mean an increase of 53% vis-a-vis the sales during 2015. Also, noteworthy is that in 2015 the sales of vinyl records obtained more benefits than Spotify Free, YouTube and VEVO together.

Faced with these amazing numbers, Sony has decided to re-enter this business. Some other big and traditional players of this industry has already initiated to enter again in this business. Such as the British HMV chain. HMV has re-opened its store in Shibuya, Japan, a store that currently has 60% dedicated to this Format.

It is also said that Sony is now looking for engineers who know how to manufacture quality vinyls. Since there are  only a few people specializing in this market.

On the other hand, other manufacturers from the  relevant fields are also expected to announce plans to enter this business in response to the movement of Sony.

Thanks a lot for your time. Hope you have enjoyed reading my article ‘Sony will remanufacture vinyl discs’.

Charge batteries through wifi from distance

Charge batteries through wifi, is an article where I have mentioned the background and invention process of charging batteries through wifi. The whole concept is discussed below:

Ikola Tesla  was disliked by the cables. He imagined and worked for a world in which they were not necessary.  Neither to communicate nor to transmit the energy. The first part of his dream has been fulfilled: there are radio, television, mobile telephony and Wi-Fi networks to prove it. The second part has become more pleasing. But begins to give satisfaction in the form of mats that recharge mobile and systems that feed from the waves of television or mobile.

The next advance in wireless energy has been achieved. That is the system to charge batteries through wifi. Interestingly, thanks to a system designed for communication: the wifi used by most households. A team of researchers from the University of Washington in Seattle (USA) has used a router to charge remote batteries. At the moment they have managed to power devices. Such as those using small appliances and remote controls (nickel-metal hydride batteries). Also, the button cells of the watches (small lithium-ion batteries). The magazine  MIT Technological Review  collects in an article the study, with an ambitious title:  “To feed the next billions of devices with the Wi-Fi ”

The concept of charging batteries through wifi

The system presented there is named PoWiFi (English acronym for “feed through wifi”). It operates at distances up to 8.5 meters. To achieve this. The researchers created a system that collects the energy from the wifi and continuously supplies it to the batteries.

The researchers presume that their achievement is compatible with the usual use of Wi-Fi . Also, it “does not significantly compromise its performance” to connect devices to the Net and to each other. However, for the Radio communication professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, José Manuel Riera , this would only be possible in “houses isolated and distant from one another”. Such as those of residential areas of the United States. But, not so much in apartments and floors in which many Europeans live,. Just by the interference of the connection with those of the neighbors.

“When we are not using the Internet, our router only uses 1% of the transmission time. They are disconnections of milliseconds that take advantage of other wireless networks to transmit, “says Riera. The use to supply power, however, requires the router to transmit energy continuously.” In a high usage environment, such as a university or a company, could not be applied “, illustrates the professor.

How does it work?

Unlike the devices that use the television and mobile phone frequencies, this system works with frequencies of the band ISMC (which includes Wi-Fi, but also Bluetooth and ZigBee ). US and European legislation does not limit it’s use to communications. Therefore, could also be used to power small devices, according to the authors.

However, power limitations in Europe (100 milliwatts) and the US (up to one watt, under certain conditions) are very far from what is needed to charge a smartphone. A smartphone needs 4 or 5 volts. To charge your battery for this system, you would have to emit a power a million times greater.

In addition, the waves emitted by a router are broadcasted in all directions (it is precisely the quality that allows them to use devices to connect devices located in various places of a house). But that dispersion plays against the power they are able to transmit.

In spite of the inconvenience, in the opinion of the professor of Electronic Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, José Sánchez-Dehesa, the investigation is “a significant advance” to keep fed all type of low consumption sensors. Such as those used in home automation and other internet applications. In fact, the study is completed with two new devices . A camera and a temperature sensor – that feed perfectly through the new system. Tesla’s house would have fitted in well.

Thank you all for reading my article ‘Charge batteries through wifi from distance’. Hopefully this new system will overcome all the set backs and present use more comfortable and efficient charging for our devices.

solar energy ‘surpasses all forecasts and expectations’

Solar energy ‘continues to surpass all forecasts and expectations. It stands at 6 cents kilowatt-hour. In 2011, the US Department of Energy launched the SunShot Initiative, which sought to drastically reduce photo voltaic energy prices by 2020. This week, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has confirmed that 85 % of 2020 targets . Among them the most important is the ‘price’.

Today, in Kansas City (the place that is taken as the average reference in the United States because it has the average number of hours of sunlight in the country) kilowatt-hour has been placed at 6 cents. Therefore, without government subsidies that reduce the cost of the panels even more. In fact, this figure was calculated taking into account real cases and market prices .

Photovoltaic Energy

The Photo voltaic energy is the natural resource that, through the application of technology, can be exploited industrially. The term also refers to the ability to transform or put something into motion.

It is known as photo voltaic energy. Therefore, the type of electricity (electric energy) that is obtained directly from the rays of the sun or solar energy. Thanks to the quantum photo-detection of a device. The photo voltaic energy allows to produce electricity for distribution networks, to supply isolated houses and to feed all type of apparatuses.
